Cell Organelles Flashcards
Ribosomes
RYE-boh-sohms
Tiny particles; made up of rRNA units
Function: Protein Factories
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) (en-doh-PLAZ-mik reh-TIK-yoo-lum)
Membranous network of interconnected canals and sacs; rough ER: with ribosomes attached; smooth ER: without attachment
Function:
Rough ER > receive and transport new proteins
Smooth ER > makes new membrane
Golgi Apparatus
GOL-jee
Stack of flattened, membranous sacs
Function: Chemical processing & packaging center
Mitochondria
my-tuh-KON-dree-ah
Very tiny cell; 2 membranous sacs one inside the other; contains its own DNA molecule
Function: Cells Power Plant by enzymes using oxygen to break down glucose and other nutrients
Lysosomes
LYE-soh-sohms
Bubble of enzyme encased by membrane
Function: Cell’s digestive system
Centrioles
SEN-tree-ohlz
Pair of hollow cylinders made up of tiny tubules
Function: Cell Reproduction
Microvilli
my-kroh-VILL-eye
Small fingerlike projections of the plasma membrane of some cells
Function: Absorption
Cilia
SIL-ee-ah
Short, hair like extensions on surface of some cells
Function:
1) Moving substances along surface of the cell
2) Non-moving cilia have sensory functions.
Flagella
flah-JEL-um
Single and much longer projection of some cells
Function: Human example; tail on sperm cell to provide propulsion in moving to destination cell.
