CELL + ORGANELLES Flashcards
What is Prophase?
Chromosomes condense, spindle fibers form, nuclear envelope breaks down
What is Metaphase?
Chromosomes align along equator of cell
What is Anaphase?
Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles of the cell
What is Telophase?
Nuclear envelopes re-form, chromosomes decondense
What is Cytokenisis?
Division of the cytoplasm into daughter cells.
What is Interphase?
During interphase, each chromosome replicates to become two identical sister chromatids attached at a region called the centromere.
Cell growth & protein synthesis occur in preparation for cell division.
What is Mitosis?
A cell division process in eukaryotes that divides the genetic material into two identical daughter nuclei.
What is the Centromere?
Constriction where sister chromatids of a duplicated chromosome are held together.
What is a Chromosome?
A molecule of DNA wrapped around proteins and contained in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells.
What is a Spindle?
A set of microtubule proteins that coordinate the movement and division of chromosomes during mitosis.
What is a Sister Chromatid?
One of two identical copies of a chromosome produced by DNA replication and attached to each other at the centromere.
What is a centrosome?
Microtubule-organizing center in cells; in animals cells, it contains two, short cylinders of microtubules called centrioles.
What are the phases of mitosis?
The phases of mitosis are: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
What are the functions of mitosis?
Growth and repair of body tissues
Produce two daughter cells from one parent cell
Produce daughter cells that are genetically identical
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
