Cell Organelles Flashcards
1
Q
Cell membrane
A
A border/gate that lets certain things in and out (semi-permeable).
2
Q
Vesicle
A
Small sac made by the cell mebrane made through endocytosis and exocytosis. It moves substances/particles into or out of the cell.
3
Q
Chloroplast
A
- conducts photosynthesis
- takes glucose made in the day and uses it as its source of energy at night (since there’s no sun)
- plant cell only
4
Q
Mitochondria
A
- where cell respiration occurs, making ATP (adenosine triphosphate)
- runs on glucose as its main energy source
5
Q
Nucleus
A
- contains DNA (eukaryotic cells only) and keeps it safe
- small blob in the nucleus is the nucleolus, the specific part where the DNA is located
6
Q
Endoplasmic reticulum
A
- attached to the nucleus
- transports molecules around
- two types: rough and smooth
- rough endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes attached which produces proteins for the rest of the cell to function which are transported
- smooth endoplasmic reticulum helps make and process lipids
- forms channels and compartments in cytoplasm to separate different organelle functions
7
Q
Golgi Apparatus
A
- packages chemicals and proteins into vesicles which are pinched off for storage or secretion
- a type of vesicle produced is the lysosome
8
Q
Ribosome
A
- not membrane bound organelle
- makes proteins
9
Q
Vacuole
A
- acts as storage of materials
- plants cell has one large vacuole
- animal cells has small vacuole scattered or none at all
10
Q
Cell Wall
A
- extra layer in plant cells for further protection
- keep it’s structure/shape
- only plant cells
