Cell Organelles Flashcards
Nonmembranous organelles
Not completely enclosed by membranes and all components are in direct contact with cytosol
Membranous organelles
Isolated from cytosol by phospholipid membranes
Cytoskeleton
Strength and support, movement of cell structures and materials via a “sidewalk system”
Microvilli
Small, fingerlike extensions of the exposed plasma membrane of an epithelial cell. Meant to increase surface area for absorbing materials.
Centriole
Essential for movement of chromosomes in cell division, organization, and microtubules in the cytoskeleton.
Flagella
Tail of the cell to move the cell. Only cell in humans is sperm.
Cilium
Small, hair like structures that help in movement of a particle near the membranes outer surface
Ribosomes
Responsible for Protein synthesis.
Proteasomes
Breakdown and recycling of intracellular proteins
Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum
Lipid synthesis and steroid protein
The Golgi Apparatus
Storage, modification, and packaging of proteins/ makes vesicles
Lysosomes
Intercellular removal of damaged organelles or pathogens.
Peroxisomes
Absorb and break down hydrogen peroxide.
Mitochondria
Produces energy
Nucleus
Contains DNA, RNA, proteins, control center of cell.
