Cell Metabolism Flashcards
What are metabolic patterns?
The processes of the metabolism that degrade food molecules and synthesize macromolecules needed by the cell.
What is the metabolism?
Is the summary of all the biochemical reactions in the cells in order to maintain life.
Glucose oxidation in order to obtain ATP
Glycolysis
Acetyl-coa oxidation in order to obtain GTP
Krebs’ cycle
Disposal of the electrons released by glycolysis and Krebs’ cycle and stored as ATP.
Oxidative Phosphorylation
Synthesis of pentoses and release of the reducing power needed for anabolic reactions.
Pentose Phosphate Pathway
Disposal of NH4+ in less toxic forms
Urea Cycle
Fatty acids breakdown into Acetyl-coa, to be used by the Krebs’ cycle.
Fatty acid b-oxidation
Glucose synthesis from smaller precursors, to be used by the brain.
Gluconeogenesis
Two categories of the metabolism
Catabolism and anabolism
What is catabolism?
Comes from the world cata that means destruction, involves oxidation and the release of energy
What is anabolism?
The synthesis of complex molecules, usually involves reduction and requires the cell to expend ATP.
What are the reactions that yield energy?
Exergonic reactions, partner of catabolic reactions
Reactions that require an input of energy are?…
Endergonic reaction, partner of the anabolic reactions.
What are the four classes of macromolecules?
1-Polysaccharides 2-Lipids 3-Nucleic acids 4-Proteins They are synthesized by anabolic reactions.
