Cell membranes Flashcards
Explain Cell Membranes and Movement Across Membranes
Cell membranes regulate the movement of substances in and out of cells through various mechanisms. There are three different types of transportation, diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and osmosis, active transport also is one but it wont be featured on the test.
Types of Transport: What is Simple Diffusion?
Movement of small or nonpolar molecules across the membrane from high to low concentration without energy input.
Types of Transport: What is Facilitated Diffusion?
Process where larger or polar molecules pass through the membrane via specific transport proteins without using energy.
Types of Transport: What is Osmosis?
The diffusion of water across a semipermeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to high solute concentration.
