Q

define the phrase ‘selectively permeable membrane’

A

-selectively permeable membrane is used to describe a membrane that contains channel-forming proteins that allow molecules to travel directly across the membrane through their pores.
- the size of the pores created by the channel forming proteins controls the size of the molecules that can travel through it.
- small molecules (water) can move through but large molecules (starch) cannot.
