Cell Membrane Structure Flashcards
Proteins with carbohydrate chains extending outwards for cell recognition and signalling, found on the extracellular surface
Glycoprotein
Lipids with carbohydrate chains facing the extracellular enviroment, aiding in stability and communication
Glycolipid
A molecule located within the cell membrane structure between phospholipids in the bilayer mainly found in animal cell membranes, regulating fluidity
Cholestrol
A type of transmembrane protein that forms hydrophilic pores that allow specific molecules or ions to pass through the bilayer
Protein Channel
Proteins attached to either the inner or outer surface, interacting with phospholipid heads or integral proteins for support and signalling.
Peripheral Protein
Proteins that are embedded within the bilayer, often spanning across it (transmembrane), functioning in transport and signalling
Integral Protein
A double later of phospholipids forming the fundemental structure of the cell membrane, with the hydrophobic heads facing outwards (intracellularly and extracellularly)
Phospholipid Bilayer
The nonpolar fatty acid chains of phospholipids that repel water and face inward, forming the membrane’s interior.
Hydrophobic Tail
The polar phosphate-containing part of phospholipids that attracts water and faces outward toward the aqueous environment.
