Cell Membrane Flashcards

1
Q

Cell membrane provides a physical barrier around cell. The membrane controls what comes in and moves out of cell

A

It’s flexible I like plant cell membrane that separates the cells external environment and internal environment.

Structurally it’s a phospholipid bilayer (double layered membrane). The lipids are hydrophobic (water hating tails int he inside) and the phosphate heads are hydrophilic (water loving on the outside)

The membrane is embedded with transmembrane proteins

The membrane controls substance movement in and out of cells

Fats don’t like water they don’t mix
Phosphate heads provide a barrier so the fats aren’t in direct contact with the water
Interstitial fluid is on the outside

Q

Transmembrane proteins are imbedded within the cell membrane.

TP transports substances in and out of cells

A

TRANSPORT OF SUBSTANCES - TP transports substances such as the movement of charged particles eg hydrogen and larger molecules such as glucose.

IMMUNOLOGICAL TRANSPORT - helps our immune cells recognise our own cells (stops our WBC attacking our body cells). When WBC travel past it recognises it is a healthy cell and not a foreign cell. Sometimes WBC attacks the cells, they don’t see the TP are our own to they attack it as they think it’s foreign.

RECEPTORS - recognition sites for hormones etc. ie it receives hormones. Glucose needs assistance getting through same with all molecules with an electric charge. Anything with a + or - such as hydrogen (H+) chloride (cl-), potassium (k+) all known as ions ions have an electrical charge they can’t move back and forth so move via a sodium channel for example eh thyroid hormone receptor binds to TP it will increase the metabolism in that cell.
