Cell Membrane Flashcards
Diffusion
The movement of gas molecules that move directly across the cell membrane
Osmosis
The movement of water molecules that moves directly through the cell membrane
Facilitated diffusion
The movement of larger molecules through the protein channel
Phospholipid bilayer
Consists of two layers of phospholipid with a hydrophobic(tails, fear of water/repelling and hydrophilic(heads, attracting water)
Active transport
The movement of substances from lower concentration to higher concentration by the use of energy
Passive transport
Movement of substance from high concentration to low concentration with using energy
Semi permeable
A membrane that will allow certain molecules or ions to pass through it by diffusion
Concentration gradient
Occurs when the concentration of particles is higher in one area than another
Endocytosis
A process by which cells absorb external material by engulfing it with the cell membrane
Exocytosis
The movement of materials out of the cell
Isotonic
Any external solution that’s has the same solute concentration and water concentration compared to body fluids
Hypotonic
When the outside of a cell has more water and even it out by transporting water to the cell
Hypertonic
When the cell has more water than the outside of the cell and transports water to the outside of the cell
Phospholipid
Major membrane lipids that consist of lipid bilayers
Solute
The mirror component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent
