Cell division and stem cells Flashcards
Differentiation
the process by which cells attain distinct and different forms and functions.
Specialised cells
Cells that have structures/ adaptions that allow them to do a particular function.
Pluripotent
Have the ability to differentiate into all different types of cells in the body. e.g. stem cells.
Meristems
regions of unspecialised cells in plants that are capable of cell division.
Embryonic stem cell pros.
- Painless
- Plentiful supply
3.Can treat a wide variety of diseases - Less wastage.
Embryonic stem cell cons.
- Embryos can’t consent.
- Harm to the embryos.
- Could cause cancer.
- Long term effects unknown.
Adult bone marrow pros
- Tried and tested
- Quick recovery
- Consent can be given.
- Low risk
Adult bone marrow cons
- Painful
- Operation hazards
- Few types of tissue produced.
Functions of mitosis
- Growth of tissues.
- Repair of tissues
3.Reproduction.
–> (binary fissions in unicellular organisms)
Stages of the cell cycle
G1, S, G2, M
Stages of mitosis
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase.
Prophase
Chromosomes form as chromatids are copied.
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle as the cell grows larger and spindles form.
Anaphase
Chromatids separate and the nucleus divides
Telophase
Chromatids are pulled to opposite poles and cell begins to split.
