Cell Division Flashcards
What is the cell cycle?
The life cycle of a cell
Which process occupies most of the life of a cell? M Phase, or Interphase?
Interphase.
What are the four phases of M phase?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase
Which cells divide very often?
Skin cells and cells that line the digestive tract.
Which cells don’t divide very often?
Nerve cells and muscle cells.
What happens during prophase? (Hint: there are 5 components)
The nuclear envelope breaks down, the spindle apparatus forms, the DNA condenses from chromatin to chromosomes, the centrioles go to opposite sides, and the chromosomes attach to the spindle apparatus.
What is one example of an internal regulator?
Cyclin
What is one example of an external regulator?
Growth factors (From other cells)
What is it called when the area around a cell is too crowded for it to divide?
Density dependent inhibition
What happens during metaphase?
The chromosomes move to the middle of the cell.
What happens during anaphase?
The chromosomes are split apart
What are some of the reasons that a cell is limited in its growth?
DNA overload, the exchange of materials, and the ratio of surface area and volume.
What is the difference between a chromatid and a chromosome?
A chromatid is the individual unit which joins with a sister chromatid in order to form a chromosome.
What is a centromere?
A centromere is the part at which the two sister chromatids join to form a chromosome.
What occurs during G1?
During G1, organelles are developed, and proteins are made.
