Cell Division Flashcards
How many chromosomes are there in a new cell created by mitosis?
46
If one cell divides by mitosis, how many cells will you have by the end of the process?
2 ‘new’ ones. The original split so therefore created 2 new cells
What happens during ‘interphase’?
The cell grows, replicates DNA and prepares to divide
Interphase occurs at 3 stages. Name them
G1
S
G2
What happens to the cell in G1 phase?
The cell that is newly created begins to grow. DNA supervises the work of the cell. There is metabolism (exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide), the cell eats and breathes
What makes the cell move from G1 to S phase?
Proteins called cyclins and enzymes called kinases interact.
The 2 particular chemicals are CDK and G1 cyclin.
What’s does the S stand for in S phase and what happens to the cell in this phase?
S stands for synthesis and the cell duplicates it’s DNA. The copies are called sister chromatids and during the phase they remain attached at the centromere
What happens in G2 phase?
The cell gets bigger again to get ready to divide. CDK and cyclins are used again. To push the cell into the next cycle. The copies remain with the originals in a relaxed state in the nucleus.
Name the 4 phases of mitosis
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
