Cell Division Flashcards
What are the stages of the cell cycle
Interphase, Mitosis, Cytokinesis
What happens in interphase
Cell grows, DNA replicates, organelles made
Purpose of mitosis
Growth and repair of tissues, and reproduce asexually
What happens in cytokinesis
Cytoplasm splits, two identical cells form
How many chromosomes in a human cell
46 (23 pairs)
What are chromosomes
DNA molecules carrying genes
What are stem cells
Unspecialized cells that divide and change
Where are stem cells found
Embryos, bone marrow, plant meristems
Pros and cons of stem cells
+ Treat diseases, - Ethical issues
What is differentiation
Cells specialize for a function
When does differentiation happen
Animals – early; Plants – lifelong
Describe what happens in each stage of the cell cycle
- In interphase, the cell grows and increases the number of subcellular structures. The DNA is copied, forming two identical copies of each chromosome.
- In mitosis, the nucleus divides. One set of chromosomes is pulled to each side of the cell.
- In cytokinesis, the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide, forming two genetically identical daughter cells.
