S: DNA replication
G2: protein synthesis
M phase: mitosis and cytokinesis

Somatic cells - non sex cells, mitosis
Sex cells - sperm or oocyte, meiosis

Helicase unwinds DNA helix
DNA polymerase attaches itself to starting site
