Q

explain the three stages in interphase?

A

g1 - cell growth and normal function occurs here. (Organelles replicated here)

synthesis- dna replication occurs, each length of DNA forms a pair of strands which are identical and there is a build up of ATP stores

g2 - growth and checkpoint phase. Replication of centrioles (checks and repairs damage to DNA)

Q

explain what happens in interphase?

A
  • first part of interphase, the cell grows and organelles are replicated.
  • Then DNA is replicated.
  • each length of DNA forms a pair of strands. these strands are identical and are called sister chromatids.
  • they are joined at the centromere

Q

what are the phases in mitosis?
Describe what happens in each stage?

A

Prophase - chromatin condenses into chromosomes, becoming more visible. centrioles duplicate and and move to opposite poles. centrioles form spindle fibres. the nuclear envelope begins to disintegrate

Metaphase - chromosomes line up along the equator of the cells. Spindle fibres attach to the centromere

Anaphase - the Spindle fibres begin to contract. sister chromatids are pulled to opposite poles of the cell by spindle fibres

Telophase - chromatids have separated now are chromosomes. the nuclear envelope reforms around each set of daughter chromosomes
