Cell Division Flashcards
What is the cell cycle
A series of stages that describe how a cell divides
What are chromosomes
They are made of DNA and found in pairs in the body cells
What is a Meristem tissue
Undifferentiated plant cells
What is Mitosis
The part of the cycle where cells divide to make to two identical cells
What are stem cells
Undifferentiated cells that can form copies or make a specialised cell
What carry the code for producing specific proteins in chromosomes?
Genes
What is the first step to the cell cycle?
The cell grows and increases the number of sub-cellular structures such as ribosomes and mitochondria
What is the second step to the cell cycle
The genetic material is doubled: DNA is replicated to make two copies of each chromosome
What is the 3rd step of the cell cycle
Chromosomes line up
What is the 4th step of the cell cycle
Mitosis occurs when one set of chromosomes is pulled into each end of the cell
What is the last step of the cell cycle
A new nucleus forms around each set of chromosomes. The cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form two identical ‘daughter’ cells
Where can stem cells be found in animal cells
The embryo, bone marrow
Types of ways stem cells can be used as medical treat enemy’s
Using patients own step cells, using embryonic stem cells
Where is the meristem tissue found in plants?
Tip of the roots, shoots, between the xylem and phloem
