Cell Division Flashcards
What do chromosomes carry?
DNA (DeoxyriboNucleic Acid)
What do chromosomes contain the code to produce?
Genes
How many chromosomes are in the human body cell?
46 chromosomes, arranged in 23 pairs
When does mitosis occur?
Either when an organism grows, or when an organism is damaged and needs new cells
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are cells that have not undergone differentiation.
What is an embryo?
An embryo develops from a fertilised egg. They are stem cells if they are at the early stages of development
What is a disadvantage to adult stem cells?
Adult stem cells are limited to differentiating into related cell types only
How do plants clone?
They use their cells in their meristems
What are three medical conditions/diseases that stem cells could be used to treat?
Type 1 Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis and Spinal Cord or Brain injury
What is therapeutic cloning?
It is the idea of using an embryonic stem cell to treat conditions and more
