Cell Cycle Flashcards
What is the “central dogma” of molecular biology?
- Information in DNA transferred to mRNA via transcription
- Protein created by a ribosome and tRNA using information contained in mRNA
What is the cell cycle?
Series of events that takes place in a cell leading to its division and duplication
Why do cells divide?
Reproduction, growth, and repair
What phases make up interphase?
G1, G0, S, G2
What are the characteristics of G0?
The cell is quiescent; occurs in senescent cells
What are the characteristics of G1?
Growth phase; biochemical fxn occurs (e.g. protein synthesis)
What are the characteristics of S?
Synthesis - DNA replication
What are the characteristics of G2?
Microtubules
What is a pluripotent cell?
A cell that is able to differentiate into all cell types, AKA a stem cell
