Cell Blocking Flashcards
involves the preparation of cells by histopathologic procedure
Cell Blocking
used for diagnosis when cancer is suspected or to provide evidence
of metastatic disease
Cell Blocking
performed in conjunction with Papanicolaou smear preparation
Cell Blocking
Materials suitable for the Cell Block procedure
Sputum containing cells in thick mucus.
Effusions in which cells are growing as a state of cell culture.
Washings containing cell clusters, which are mechanically exfoliated.
What anticoagulant are used to collect fluids?
Potassium Oxalate
Heparin or Sodium Citrate - Citric Acid
Volume of coagulant for each 100 mL of fluid
2 mL
Should be processed in the fresh state promptly
Samples
Describing the general characteristics of the sample and volume received
Gross Examination
Descriptive terms used in gross examination
Blood-tinged Clear Yellow Amber Frothy Mucinous
General Processing of Samples
- Agitate the fluid slightly and pour into test tubes.
- Centrifuge at medium speed for 15 to 30 min.
- Pour off supernatant.
- Prepare two smears for the Papanicolaou technique from the sediment.
- Pour a small amount of fixative directly into the test tube containing the sediment to
coagulate it and let it stand for 15 to 30 minutes. - Wrap the recovered sediment using lens paper or gauze.
- Immerse in the fixative for 6 to 24 hours depending on the size of the coagulated
sample. - Perform routine procedure for dehydration, clearing, infiltration, embedding,
sectioning and staining.
