cell biology and organisation Flashcards
what are the characteristics and function of mitochondrion?
- has too layer membrane; smooth outer & folded inner
- has enzyme
- release ATP energy
what is the function of centriole?
form spindle fibre during cell division
what does Golgi Apparatus do?
processes, modifies, packs & transports chemicals
what is the characteristics & function of plasma membrane?
- thin & elastic film, partially permeable
- separate cell content & external environment
- control movement of substances
function of lysosome in cell?
- hydrolyse complex organic molecules
- breaks down bacteria
what does nucleus do in the cell?
- control all cell activites
- has chromosomes that contain deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). DNA determines cell characteristics & metabolic function
what does ribosome do and where is it present?
- present on surface of R.E.R or freely in cytoplasm
- site for protein synthesis
function of rough endoplasmic reticulum (R.E.R) ?
- has ribosomes attached on surface
- transport proteins synthesised by ribosomes
what does smooth endoplasmic reticulum does?
- no ribosomes attaches on surface
- synthesis & transports glycerol and lipids
- carries out detoxification of drugs & metabolic by-products
what does cell sap in vacuole contain?
water, organic acids, sugar, mineral salts
what is the function of vacuole?
- water in absorbed into vac. and cell becomes turgid
- vac. contracts during osmoregulation, osmosis & excretion
What does chloroplast do for plant cell?
- absorbs sunlight & converts to chemical energy during photo.
give the function of cell wall.
- maintains the shape of plant cells
- provides mechanical support to plant cells
does cytoplasm control cell activities?
no, they act as medium for biochemical reactions for cells
