Cell Flashcards
What is the most abundant unsaturated fatty acid in animal membrane lipid?
Oleic acid
What is alkaptonuria?
A rare inherited disorder that prevents the body from fully breaking down two proteins: Phenylalanine & Tyrosine. This is due to the body not producing enough of an enzyme called Homogentisic dioxygenase (HGD)
Hyperoxaluria
This is caused by defective peroxisomal metabolism of glyoxalate derived from glycine. This leads to deposition of excess oxalate in your urine.
Clinical correlates of lysosomes
- Gout
- Inclusion cell (I-cell) disease
- Postmortem autolysis
- Some genetic disease where lysosomal enzymes are absent
Gout leads to inflammation and arthritis T/F?
T
How is gout formed?
Uric acid crystals are deposited around the knee joints. When these crystals are phagocytosed they cause physical damage to the lysosomes damaging vacuoles and releasing enzymes resulting to inflammation and arthritis.
