What doses do we have?
250mg, 500mg, 1g
What is it used for?
Usually for infections, mainly gonorrhea
How does it work?
Binds to bacterial cell wall
What are contraindications?
Sensitive to cephalosporins or penicillin
What are side effects?
Rash, Diarrhea, Pain at IM site, Anaphylaxis
What is the route and dosage for treatment of gonorrhea?
Single dose, IM, 250mg
Is this medication reconstituted?
Yes, usually with NaCl or lidocaine, read instructions
What is the onset, peak, duration?
Rapid, 1-2hrs, 12-24 hrs.
What to assess for before and after giving medication?
Ask for allergy for penicillin or cephalosporins.
Observe for rash, pruritus, laryngeal edema, wheezing
Watch for diarrhea, cramping, fever, bloody stools
What to evaluate and tell patient?
Advise about possible superinfection and notify HCP if fever and diarrhea develop
