During construction, the architect should keep a log of their site visits and observations for future reference. These are referred to as field reports, and they should follow a standardized format.

ASI stands for Architect’s Supplemental Instructions. These instructions can be issued during construction for minor changes in the work that do not affect project time or budget.

Question 3

Change order

An amendment to the construction contract signed by the owner, architect, and contractor authorizing a change in the work, an adjustment in the contract sum or the contract time, or both.

Question 4

Construction change directive

Answer 4

These are issued to compel the Contractor to act in a particular way in the event that there is a disagreement with the Owner regarding time or cost adjustment for some aspect of the work. They are issued to keep construction moving along, with the intention that any disputes will be resolved in the future.

Question 5

Minor change in work

Answer 5

The architect is able to order minor changes in the work, so long as they do not affect project time or budget. These are typically issued as architect’s supplemental instructions, or ASIs, and are signed by the architect alone.
