Duties of Special Crime Investigators
• Determine if the crime has been committed.
• Verify territorial jurisdictions.
• Discover all facts and collect physical evidence.
• Recover stolen property.
• Identify perpetrator.
• Locate and apprehend the perpetrator.
• Aid in the prosecution of the perpetrator.
• Testify effectively in court.
Phases of Special Crime Investigation
- The Preliminary Investigation.
- The In-depth Investigation.
- The concluding Investigation.
it involves the first exposure of the criminal offense to the investigative effort. it cannot be emphasized too strongly that this step is vital to the success of the investigation. and it serves as the foundation for the case; therefore, their must be proper foundation or the entire investigation in the jeopardy.
Preliminary Investigation
The second investigative state of criminal offense is the follow-up or the continuing inquiry. this phase follow up initial leads stemming from the preliminary investigation. and this inquiry begins with a general re-examination of all facts, leads and other types of investigation secured during the preliminary investigation.
In-depth Investigation
It is the direct outgrowth of the previous two stages. if the preliminary investigation and in-depth investigation have been unsuccessful if identifying, locating, and arresting a suspect, certain administrative decisions concerning the continuation of the case must be made. An active inquiry cannot continue indefinitely.
