Nationalism
Loyalty and devotion to a nation - possible feelings of superiority over other nations
Regionalism
A (political) ideology that focuses on the interests of a particular region or group of regions
Non-violent protest
A philosophy and strategy for social change that rejects the use of physical violence - uses disobedience
Terrorism
Attacks, or threats of attacks on both military and non-military targets which are intended to create fear (terror) and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants and are perpetrated for an ideological goal
Insurrection
An act of revolt against civil authority - usually involving rebellion against the rules
Separatism
Demands, and sometimes violence, for greater political autonomy and even independence for a part of the country and the subsequent formation of a new statem
Invasion
A military offensive controlled by another, generally with the objective of either conquering, liberating or re-establishing control or authority over a territory or gaining concessions
Coup d’etat
A military takeover of the government of a country by its own troops and their commanders
Ethnic cleansing
The persecution through imprisonment, expulsion or killing of members of a group to achieve ethnic homogeneity in majority-controlled territory
Civil War
Sustained, organised and large-scale conflict involving two-sided violence between two powers or societies that are in control of different parts of the countries
Revolution
Popular uprising against an unpopular government - normally led by citizens
Nimbyism
‘Not In My Back Yard’ - resistance to development, opposition by local citizens to the locating in their neighbourhood of a civic project (eg things that are considered unsightly, dangerous or likely to lead to decreased property value)
Fundamentalism
Strict adherence to literal interpretation of scripture in parts of religion
Escalation
Rapid increase eg in violence, size (scale)/ involvement of people in a conflict
Resolution
Firm decision to do or not to do something - solving a problem - providing a solution to a problem
