Explain the key method of town planning and illustrate your answer with examples of how the method is applied:
The method or strategy can be broken down in three general steps: Survey, analysis and plan.
Theories about what makes a “good city” as a physical form have changed since the 1800’s. Compare two contrasting examples of city design and the objectives that they were based on.
Garden cities were created to counteract bad airquality in the industrial towns. It was unhealthy to live close to the factories. Workers got physicaly ill from living in bad conditions. The ceos provided affordable housing pland to have greenery, recreational space and barriers like green belts to protect farmland from the urban spread and the workers and their families from the emissions. The plan was to take the best attributes from the town and the countryside and have it in one space. Welwyn in the UK is influenced by the garden city ideal.
Influenced by the urban star model is Köpenhamns s.c. finger plan, their traffic and development plan for the metropolitan area. Transit is star shaped with higher density along the tramsitroutes.
What is included in the survey state of the key method of planning??
You take stock of what you have now. Looking at maps, visiting the area and/or interjuving people. In the example they looked at where the open spaces in London currently were.
Explain the analysis step in the key method:
Analys intails analysing at the statistics you got from the survey. In the example they analyzed open space per person and witch part of the city that had open space within walking distance. Thresholds help determine where the need for more open space is
Explain plan in the key method of planning:
In the plan the results of the earlier steps are presented along with one or more propositions. In the example they present a few different options or suggestions for new open spaces and the pros and cons of these locations.
