    -they people around him view Scrooge as a lost cause.
    — these people have no hope in Scrooge so when Scrooge goes through his redemption it is a big deal to his peers.

  • “as” the repetition of this and similes four times shows that Scrooge is insecure about himself now and was much confident then.
