What are routine procedures for newborn? (6)
Vitamin K: integral for clotting factor. Newborns don’t have it so we recommend administering IM injection 6 hours after birth to prevent bleeding. Built up in our gut over time.
Newborn blood spot screen – heel prick taken 24 – 78 hours after birth; screens for 27 rare but treatable disorders (metabolic, endocrine, blood, cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, severe combined immunodeficiency)
Critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) screen: pulse oximeter on right hand and left leg to see oxygenation of blood in babe’s body
Bilirubin screen (through public health or hospital)
Hearing screen (through public health or hospital)
Erythromycin Eye Ointment (no longer routine) – syphilis and gonorrhea
Is erythromycin reccomended if client screens negative for chlamydia and gonorrhea?
No
When administer vitamin K shot?
Within 6 hours of birth
When CCHD done?
24-36 hours of birth
What is biliary atresia?
A rare but serious liver disease that will affect newborns in the first month of life
What communities is it biliary atresia more common in?
Asian communities
Screening for biliary atresia?
Infant stool card.
What does blood spot card screen for?
27 rare but treatable diseases of the newborn.
metabolic, endocrine, haematological, immune, respiratory, and neuromuscular conditions. They include, but are not limited to: congenital hypothyroidism, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, spinal muscular atrophy, and phenylketonuria.
How many doses of oral vitamin k are recommended?
3 doses – first feeding, 2-4 weeks, 6-8 weeks
When blood spot card done?
24-48 hours
