CBG11 Flashcards
What is pisum sativvum?
pea, model organism high fecudity discrete traits short lived easy to grow
What is mendels first law?
the law of segregation
during the formation of gametes the paired hereitory factors segregate from each other so each gamete reieceves one or other of the pair with equal chance
*confirmed by test cross
what is the wild type allele?
the most common form
what are pure lines?
line that is homozygous
= breed true
What is a test cross?
cross dominant of unknown genotype eg. Rr/RR
with homozygous recessive to find out genotype of dominant via offspring phenotype frequency
What is mendels second law?
the law of independent assortment
during formation of gamete the paired hereditary factors segregate independently from other pairs.
ie. genes are unlinked
What is the cause of the seed wrinkle mutation?>
-transposable element in starch branching enzyme
-amylase-amylopectin
if excess amylase not broken down has a tendency to lose sugar molecules into the cell, increase in water in cell but not as good at retaining starch amylopectin when seed loses water.
What is haploinsufficiency?
diploid organism has only single functional copy doesnt priduce enough of gene to product to bring about wild type condition
What is the ratio of heterozygous dihybrid offspring?
9:3:3:1
What are phenotypic ratios the result of?
the product law of probability
multiply probability of independent events to get probability of combined.
eg. dihybrid crosss is a combination of 2 independent monohybrid crosses
9:3:3:1
3/4 * 3/4 = 9/16
3/4 * 1/4 =3/16
1/4 *1/4 = 1/16
Assuming biallelic complete dominance what is number of F2 phenoypes and genotypes = to.
no. of F2 phenotypes =2^n
n= no. of segregating genes
no. of F2 genotypes = 3^n
n= number of segregating genes
