  • There was around 1 million protestants and 500,000 Catholics
  • Most nationalists were Catholic and most Catholics were nationalist
  • Protestants would have best housing, jobs and, schools
  • Most unionists were protestant and most protestants were unionists.

Growing tension

  • Killing of Matilda Gould - was 77 and died in 1966 7th May - threw a petrol bomb through a window. A protestant gang killed her.
  • Further isolated attacks occur e.g. Peter Ward who was killed outside pub in Belfast.

Battle of Bogside

  • 12th August 1969 around 15,000 apprentice boys ignored police warnings and marched through city - ignited into full scale battle.
  • Fierce fighting broke out between Catholics on Bogside and Protestant Unionists on other
  • State has lost control of fighting

  • Ireland was partitioned between 6 countries in the North of Ireland that would remain part of the UK and the other 26 countries, which would be the Irish free state, what became the Republic of Ireland
