Sectionalism is when one has excessive Devotion to local interests and Custom to a region of a Nation( when a person just has interest in the Region’s Customs but not the whole nation’s customs)
What was state’s rights
State’s rights was when the south beloved that the interests of the states were higher than the interests of the nation and that the states could choose what federal laws to obey. States have power independent of the fed. gov. .
Define nullification
Nullification is the idea that states could choose not to obey any laws that they found unconstitutional. A nullification crisis happened when south carolina nullified the tariff on goods from Europe and when they threatened to secede.
Why did the south support the ideas of state’s rights and nullification?
The South supported the idea of state’s rights and nullification because they wanted to protect their economy and protect slavery from being abolished.

The north supported protective tariff because they wanted people to buy their goods and and protect their factories and manufacturing.

Popular sovereignty is when a state can decide whether to be a free state or slave state by voting. ( Citizens can vote whether it is a free state or slave state)

The increased conflict between the North and South over state’s rights and nullification led to the civil war because the south wanted to keep slavery and not pay any taxes on goods from Europe. The north wanted to end slavery and have the south pay buy the north’s good from the tariff. This caused more conflicts and eventually led to the civil war.

The compromise of 1850 allowed the north to get California as a free state and prohibit slave trade in Washington DC. The compromise of 1850 allowed the south to make the north enforce the fugitive slave act more strictly, and have popular sovereignty in Utah and New Mexico.
Who was Alexander Stephens?
Alexander Stephens was a Georgia politician who supported the Georgia Platform. he did not want Georgia to secede from the Union but later became the vice president of the confederacy after Georgia seceded.

Dred Scott was a African American slave who sued for his freedom. He lived in Missouri but later moved to free states and he thought that he could sue for his freedom because he lived in the free states. (Illinois and Winsconsin)

The argument made by Dred Scott in the Dred Scott case was that since Dred Scott had lived in a free state, it made him a free man.

The supreme court ruled that Dred Scott was not a citizen and was property. This meant that he could not sue because he was not a citizen. The court also ruled that the Congress had no power to limit/stop slavery in States or territories.
