Causes of Swine Disease Flashcards
Causative agent of Pleuropneumonia
Actinobacillus
pleuropneumoniae (APP)
Characterized by sneezing,
followed by atrophy of the
turbinate bones, which may be
accompanied by distortion of
the nasal septum and shortening
or twisting of the upper jaws.
Atrophic rhinitis
Caused by a systemic bacteria
that affects many farms that
have high health issues causing
septicemia, arthritis, pericarditis
pneumonia, or skin discoloration
in animals of all ages.
is relatively rare
and it may occur as sudden
death
It can also take other forms of
presentation, depending on the
location of the infection
(pharynx, intestinal or systemic
anthrax)
Anthrax
An infection of the large
intestine mainly in pigs from 6 to
14 weeks of age.
This is characterized by diarrhea
without blood and with few or
no mucus.
Colitis
systemic bacterial
disease characterized by
diamond shaped skin lesions
and arthritis in its chronic forms.
Erysipelas
rare systemic
bacterial disease that can cause
septicemia in piglets and can also
cause reproductive problems in
sows.
Listeriosis
usually
the cause of pneumonia as
secondary infection to another
respiratory pathogen (enzootic
pneumonia, PRRS, flu)
Pasteurellosis
most
important streptococcus of pigs
causing pneumonia, septicemia,
arthritis and encephalitis in pigs
and is also of great public
importance for its zoonotic
potential.
Streptococcal Infections
is caused by
Brachyspira hyodysenteriae
(classical agent) and B.
hampsonii, and causes severe
inflammation in the large
intestine producing bloody and
mucous diarrhea.
Swine Dysentery
Clostridium tetani produces
toxins that affect the central
nervous system causing
hypersensitivity, stiffness in legs
and muscles, and opisthotonos.
