causes of income and wealth inequality Flashcards
P - One cause of wealth inequality is ethnic inequalities
E - Ethnic minorities often experience higher levels of povertythan the white population, one reason for this is that some ethnic minority groups don’t have proficient levels of English , making it very difficult to succeed in eductaion compared to those who speak English as a first language
example?
e - only 18% of the white population in scotland were in poverty between 2017 and 2020 compared to 44% for the minority ethnic population
ethnic inequalities
R - However even with higher education qualifications some ethnic minority groups are still more likely to experience wealth inequality than whites.
e - evidence shows that even with degrees and at academic level employment, some ethnic minority groups experience lower pay and higher unemployment. This suggests that it is not because of lower educational attainment but discrimination instead
example?
e - the universities and college union found that white academic staff at UK universities and colleges earned £7,000 more than their black peers which equals to 14% more.
P - Another cause of wealth inequality is education
E - Children who attend private secondary schools are a lot more likely to achieve better grades, go to better universities and end up in higher paid jobs. Those who attend public schools are a lot more likely to end up in lower paid jobs or unemployed.
evidence?
e - only 7% of the Uk school students attend fee paying schools yet typically between 30%and 40% of Oxbridge - some of the best universities in the UK - undergraduates come from private schools
education
R - However failure in education does not always mean failure in terms of wealth
E - Many people who went to public schools or did not do well in school go on to be wealthy
example?
e - For example Richard Branson dropped out of secondary school at 16 and became the foounder of the Virgin group and is now worth £4 billion
P - Another cause of poverty is low pay, as paid work is not, on its own, a guarantee of
being free from poverty.
E - Often after the cost of living is considered, many low paid workers will have very little
left to spend and many families are falling below the poverty line becoming “working
poor” households.
example?
Evidence from the BBC & JRF 2019/20 show that more than 3/5 people in poverty are
in a working household
low pay
R - Despite government efforts the problem of low pays has continued to get worse.
E: The government introduced a minimum amount a person (over 25) should be paid an
hour called the National Living Wage (NLW) as a response to low pay in the UK yet the
problem of poverty is worse than it was 20 years ago
example?.
e -
According to the BBC JRF 2019/20 13% of workers are in poverty compared to 10% of
workers in 2000.
