When was the TOV signed
June 28th 1919
Where was the TOV signed
The paris peace conference - hall of mirrors in the palace of versailles
When did the TOV go into effect
January 10, 1920
What did the TOV do?
Gave up German territories (to places such as belgium and poland) including all of their overseas colonies, accept the blame for WW1, pay £6.6 billion in reperations, limit its army to 100,000 men and six naval ships, have no airforce, tanks or submarines and demilitarise Rhineland
Why was rhineland important
Rhineland had been the primary industrial region of Germany for producing coal, steel and iron resources
The key people responsible for TOV
USA (President Woodrow Wilson), France (Prime minister Georges Clemenceau), Britain (Prime minister David Lloyd George). A delegate was Italy (Prime minister) but was locked out of decision making
What did Woodrow Wilson want from the TOV
(USA) to create an egalitarian (all people are equal and have equal rights) system that would prevent another world war
What did Georges Clemenceau want from TOV
(France) to make sure that Germany would never be a threat to France ever again and didn’t care for Woodrow Wilson’s equality beliefs
What did David Lloyd George want from TOV
(Britain) to have everyone have a balance of power but still for Germany to pay reperations
What did Woodrow Wilson think of TOV
Woodrow Wilson disliked the treaty because he saw it as not being able to create lasting peace. He also thought that those in power should have been punished, not the people
What did Georges Clemenceau think of TOV
He was dissatisfied because he did not believe that the treaty had punished Germany enough, since the reperations he wanted would involve Germany being crippled and paying forever
What did David Lloyd George think of TOV
He was dissatisfied because he thought that France was too harsh, and that because of this “we will have to fight another war in 25 years time, and at three times the cost” (quote from David Lloyd George)
What was clause 231
The war guilt clause, where Germany had to accept the sole blame for starting WW1
How did Germany react to clause 231?
It hurt Germany’s pride
How did Germany react to the reperations?
Refused to pay it until France and Britain invaded in january 1921. They said that the two countries were trying to starve their children to death
