Causality Flashcards
What is the purpose of a experiment
To demonstrate causality
For causality to happen, what is required ?
- Cause must precede effect in time
- Cause and effect must be empirically correlated with one another
- The relationship between cause and effect cannot be explained in terms of a third variable
What are the features of an experiment ?
- Establishing independent variable
- Controlling extraneous variables
- Measuring dependent variables
What are the types of validity in Quantitative research ?
- Statistical conclusion validity
- Construct validity
- External validity
- Internal validity
Explain what is meant by Statistical conclusion validity ?
1.When you do the correct analysis, without violating any assumptions.
2. You report all your analyses, even those you do not like
3. Make sure your measures are reliable
What is meant by construct validity ?
- Does a test truly measure what it claims to be measuring
- Are your operational definitions adequate
What is meant by External validity ?
- Also known as generalizability
- Can the results of the study be generalized to populations, times and settings that are not the same as the study sample, and other kinds of settings
What is meant by internal validity ?
The degree to which a study is methodologically sound and confound-free
What are the threats to internal validity ?
- History
- Maturation
- Testing
- Instrumentation
- Selection Bias
- Attrition (Mortality)
- Regression to mean
- Placebo effect
Causality assumes that _______
The value of IV is the reason for the value in DV
The credibility of an experiment depends on the _________ of the measured outcomes
