CATULLUS III (eulogy for the sparrow) Flashcards
Lugete, o Veneres Cupidinesque,
Mourn, o Venuses and Cupids,
et quantum est hominum venustiorum:
and as much as there is of rather charming men:
passer mortuus est meae puellae,
sparrow of my girl is dead,
passer, deliciae meae puellae,
sparrow, delight of my girl,
quem plus illa oculis suis amabat.
whom she was loving more than her eyes,
nam mellitus erat suamque norat
for he was honey sweet and had known her
ipsam tam bene quam puella matrem,
as well as a girl knew mother herself,
nec sese a gremio illius movebat,
nor he was moving himself from her lap
sed circumsiliens modo huc modo illuc
but hopping about now here now there
ad solam dominam usque pipiabat.
to his mistress alone he was chirping continually
qui nunc it per iter tenebricosum
who now goes on gloomy journey
illuc, unde negant redire quemquam.
to that place from which they deny that anyone returns
at vobis male sit, malae tenebrae
but let it be bad for y’all, evil shades
Orci, quae omnia bella devoratis
of the underworld, who devours all beautiful (things)
tam bellum mihi passerem abstulistis
y’all took away so beautiful sparrow from me
