CATULLUS I (dedication poem) Flashcards
Cui dono lepidum novum libellum
to whom do I dedicate (this) charming new little book
arida modo pumice expolitum?
just now polished with dry pumice stone?
Corneli, tibi: namque tu solebas
to you, Cornelius: and for you were accustomed
meas esse aliquid putare nugas.
to think that my trifles were something.
Iam tum, cum ausus es unus Italorum
now then, when you one of Italians dared
omne aevum tribus explicare cartis…
to unfold all of history in three volumes…
Doctis, Iuppiter, et laboriosis!
learned, and full of labor, by Juppiter!
Quare habe tibi quidquid hoc libelli—
so have for you whatever this (is) of little book
qualecumque, quod, o patrona virgo,
such as it is, which, o patron maiden,
plus uno maneat perenne saeclo!
may remain everlasting for more than one generation (age)!
