Catullus 8 Flashcards
Miser Catulle, desinas ineptire,
Lovesick Catullus, stop being silly
et quod vides perisse perditum ducas.
And regard as lost what you see has died.
Fulsere quondam candidi tibi soles,
Once bright suns shone for you
cum ventitabas quo puella ducebat
when you kept coming and going wherever the girl used to lead
amata nobis quantum amabitur nulla.
Loved by me as much as no girl will be loved.
Ibi illa multa cum iocosa fiebant,
When, then (ibi) those many pleasant things were happening
quae tu volebas nec puella nolebat,
Which you wanted and the girl did not say no,
fulsere vere candidi tibi soles.
Then truly bright suns shone for you.
Nunc iam illa non vult: tu quoque impotens noli,
Now she does say no; say no also, you powerless man
nec quae fugit sectare, nec miser vive,
And do not pursue one who flees and do not live lovesick,
sed obstinata mente perfer, obdura.
But, with a determined mind, endure, become firm!
Vale puella, iam Catullus obdurat,
Goodbye girl. Catullus is now firm
nec te requiret nec rogabit invitam.
And will not be looking for you nor asking for you against you will
At tu dolebis, cum rogaberis nulla.
But you will suffer when you are asked for by nobody
Scelesta, uae te, quae tibi manet uita?
Wicked (woman), alas for you, what life is left for you?
