Catullus 7 Flashcards
Quaeris, quot mihi basiationes
You ask, how many kissifications,
tuae, Lesbia, sint satis superque
Of yours, Lesbia, are enough and more than enough for me.
quam magnus numerus Libyssae harenae
As great a number as the Libyan sands that
lasarpiciferis iacet Cyrenis
Lie on the silphium-bearing Cyrene
oraclum Iovis inter aestuosi
In between the oracle of sweltering Jove
et Batti veteris sacrum sepulcrum;
and the holy tomb of old Battus;
aut quam sidera multa, cum tacet nox,
Or as many as the stars which see, when night is silent,
furtivos hominum vident amores:
the stolen love-affairs of people;
tam te basia multa basiare
that is how many kisses are enough and more
vesano satis et super Catullo est,
than enough for you to kiss love-mad Catullus
quae nec pernumerare curiosi
a number which the nosy could not count
possint nec mala fascinare lingua.
Nor evil tongue bewitch.
