Catullus 3 Flashcards
Lugete, O Veneres Cupidinesque, et quantum est hominum venustiorum: passer mortuus est meae puellae, passer, deliciae meae puellae, quem plus illa oculis suis amabat.
Mourn, Oh Venuses and Cupids and how many of more charming men there are. The sparrow of my girl is dead, the sparrow, favorite of my girl, whom that one was loving more than her eyes.
nam mellitus erat suamque norat ipsam tam bene quam puella matrem, nec sese a gremio illius movebat, sed circumsiliens modo huc modo illuc ad solam dominam usque pipiabat.
For he was honey-sweet and it knew she herself as well as a girl knows her mother, nor was it moving itself from her lap, but hopping around now here now there, it was chirping continuously to the mistress alone.
qui nunc it per iter tenebricosum illuc, unde negant redire quemquam. at vobis male sit, malae tenebrae Orci, quae omnia bella devoratis:
Who now goes through the dark journey to that place from where they deny that anyone to return. But let it be bad for you, evil shadows of the underworld, you who devour all beautiful things.
tam bellum mihi passerem abstulistis
o factum male! o miselle passer!
tua nunc opera meae puellae
flendo turgiduli rubent ocelli.
You have taken so beautiful a sparrow from me. Oh evil deed! Oh wretched little sparrow! Now by your work, the little eyes of my girl, swollen by weeping become red.
