Pope Leo the 13th who issued the encyclical “Rerum Novarum” or “On the Conditions of Labor” in 1891

What is socialism?
Born of the philosophy of Karl Marx & it advocated distributing wealth according to need, not ownership of capital & profits
What did Marx believe? What would this give way to?
That eventually the masses would rise up, revolt & over throw the capitalist class. This would give way to communism, an ideal & equitable society in which government & laws are unnecessary
What did Pope Leo the 13th do with Rerum Novarum?
Called the people to look for & change the social causes of injustice
In the 1960s the Church’s gaze became more global because:

What did pope John Paul the 2nd remind us in his encyclical “On Human Work”?
The economy in general & work in particular exists for the good of the people, not the other way around
