Acclamation
Praising with great enthusiasm
Apostolic succession
The authority and power of Peter and the apostles passed on to the next generations of popes and bishops.
Ascension
The event 40 days after the resurrection when Jesus returned to glory in heaven.
Atonement
Restoring the relationship between people and God through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
Baptism
The sacrament in which a person becomes a child of God and a Christian.
Benediction
Meaning ‘Blessing’. A service at which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed (usually displayed on the altar in a decorative display case called a monstrance) and Catholics worship Christ in the sacrament
Blessed sacrament
A term that refers to the consecrated bread and wine (the body and blood of Christ).
Chuch
The church: people of god
A church: a building which Christians worship at.
Communion
Sharing in a meal that unites people with each other and with Christ.
Conscience
The voice of God in the heart of a person, guiding him/her to do what is right.
Consecration
The point in the mass where the bread and the wine are blessed and become the body and blood of Christ.
Consubstantial
Literally ‘of one being’, showing that the father, son and spirit are not separate entities, but one God.
Cosmic Reconciliation
The time when all things in Creation will be brought together in harmony
Creed
A statement of faith
Denominations
Distinct groups within the Christian faith, with their own organisation and traditions (e.g. Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Church of England).
Discipleship
Following Jesus
Divine word
Another name for God the Son (Jesus), coming from the term ‘logos’ in John’s gospel.
Epistles
The letters written by the apostles to the early Churches. Many of them are written by St Paul.
Eucharist
‘Thanksgiving’; another name for the Mass.
Evangelism
Preaching the good news about Jesus to other people.
