Catheters Flashcards
Core stiffness - Medium
Coating – Teflon
Tip – J 3-15 mm
Features - All-purpose wire for navigating large to medium vessels, abscess cavities, etc. J tip is atraumatic and lumen seeking.
Newton
Core stiffness - Stiff
Coating – Teflon
Tip – J-15 mm (short taper)
Features- Useful for visceral artery exchanges where extra (short support needed, e.g., obese patients, tortuous taper) vessels, stiff catheters. Typically, 175 cm to 180 cm long, 0.035-in. to 0.038-in. diameter
Rosen
Core stiffness – Very stiff
Coating – Teflon
Tip – Straight with floppy tip
Features- Very floppy, long straight tip good for crossing with small, tortuous vessels or stenosis.
Bentson
Core stiffness – Very stiff
Coating – Teflon
Tip – Straight with relatively soft tip
Features- May be used cautiously to guide large, stiff with catheters such as angioplasty balloons, stents, or relatively IVC filters, and for catheter exchanges.
Amplatz
Core stiffness – Soft to Stiff
Coating – Hydrophilic
Tip – Straight or angled
To guide the catheter into place during CVC (central venous catheter) insertions.
Glidewire
Core stiffness – Soft to Stiff
Coating – Teflon / Hydrophilic
Tip – Shapeable
Features - Used with low-profile “tibial” balloons or coaxial catheters. 0.010-in. to 0.018-in. diameter, made of steel, platinum, or nitinol
