Catheters Flashcards
What are indications for peripheral venous catheters?
(To adm meds (particularly emergency meds in case of CPA), fluids, sedation and for euthanasia)
When are peripheral venous catheters contraindicated?
(Fractious patients esp in respiratory distress, if there is cutaneous infection of the sites, and in limbs with fractures)
What does it mean that venous cut-downs are temporary?
(They should only be used for fluid resuscitation and until a peripheral venous catheter can be placed/replaced then will need to be treated as a laceration repair)
What are signs of phlebitis?
(Pain on palpation of the site or during injections, swelling, erythema, and fever)
IO catheters are particularly useful in what types of patients?
(Small and/or neonatal patients, exotics excluding birds; otherwise indications are the same as peripheral IVCs)
What blood values should be interpreted with caution if running a chem on an IO sample?
(Potassium and blood glucose)
(T/F) IO catheters are associated with a slower onset of drug effects.
(T, can be improved with fluid boluses)
What are contraindications for IO catheters?
(Being a bird, fractured bones, and infected cutaneous tissue)
What are possible complications of IO catheters?
(Infection, fat embolism, extravasation of fluids/meds, nerve injury, compartment syndrome, and fractures)
What is the primary indication for a central line?
(Patients that need frequent blood glucose and/or blood gas monitoring)
What are indications for urinary catheters?
(De-obstruction or urinary retention disorders, urine output monitoring, postoperative urinary procedures or urinary system trauma, infectious zoonotic dz control, immobilized patients to prevent urine scald or wounds from being contaminated, and contrast studies)
How can UTIs associated with urinary catheters be prevented in vet med?
(Limit duration of indwelling urinary catheters and using aseptic technique when placing them)
Where are some complications associated with peripheral venous catheters?
(Phlebitis, catheter infections, extravasation of fluids/medications, thrombosis, and catheter embolism)
