what stages of pressure ulcer in perineal or sacral area to be catheterized?
ONLY stage III and IV
if prostate problems, remember (2):
administer analgesic
use size 14 catheter or obtain an order for a smaller size if an order for larger catheter is given
length of female urethra
1.2-2 inches
length of male urethra
7-9 inches
single lumen used for

double/triple lumen used for
indwelling
triple lumen used when
continuous bladder irrigation is needed or meds need to be admined through catheter
double lumen purpose
one for inflating the balloon and one for urinary drainage

5-6 Fr

8-10 Fr with 3 mL balloon
adult female size
14-16 Fr with 5-10 mL balloon
adult male size
16-18 Fr with 6-10 mL balloon
advancing catheter in female
2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) or until urine flows
once urine appears, advance another 1-2 inches (2.5-5cm)
advancing catheter in male
7-9 inches (17-22.5 cm) or until urine flows
once urine flows, stop with a straight catheter, continue until bifurcation with an indwelling
if pt unable to void 8 hrs after cath removal
do bladder scan then call MD
