  1. HH & adhere to standard precautions
  2. Open drainage system package
  3. Open kit
  4. Open catheter package and aseptically place on field (with tweezers)

Prepare Catheter

A
  1. Open: prepare cleansing solution and lubricant
  2. Sterile gloves
  3. Apply 1st sterile drape between thighs
  4. Fenestrated drape over perineum exposing labia
  5. Bring tray on 1st sterile drape
  6. Open catheter, apply inflation syringe and lubricate

Insert Catheter (Female)

A
  1. Retract labia with non-dom hand
  2. Sterile dominant hand > use antiseptic swabs to clean top to bottom > labial fold 1, labial fold 2, directly over urethral meatus
  3. Insert catheter (5-7cm) or until urine comes > advance another 2.5-5cm
  4. Release and hold with non-dom hand
  5. Slowly inflate balloon & pull gently to ensure resistance

Insert Catheter (Male)

A
  1. Retract foreskin if not circumsized with non-dom hand
  2. Grasp penis at shaft just below tip
  3. Pull opening apart and hold
  4. Sterile dom hand, cotton ball with forceps and clean penis tip (in circular motion) x 3 times
  5. Lift penis perpendicular (straight), applying traction
  6. Ask pt to bear down as if voiding and slowly insert catheter
  7. Advance 17-22.5cm until urine flows & insert another 2.5-5cm ater
  8. Lower penis with catheter in non-dom hand, placing end of catheter in tray
  9. Inflate balloon if an in-dwelling catheter)
  10. Reposition foreskin

  1. Attach end of catheter to collecting tube of drainage system
  2. Attach drainage system below level of bladder and to bed frame
