Gather Supplies
A
- Tray
- Urinary catheter
- Blue pad
- Catheter drainage bag
- Sheet for draping
- Disposal bag
- Sterile gloves
- Cleansing solution

Prepare Workspace
A
- Clean space
- Raise bed and lower bedrail

Prepare Client
A
- Position > dorsal recumbent with hips externally rotated
- Cover client and expose perineal area only

Prepare Equipment
A
- HH & adhere to standard precautions
- Open drainage system package
- Open kit
- Open catheter package and aseptically place on field (with tweezers)

Prepare Catheter
A
- Open: prepare cleansing solution and lubricant
- Sterile gloves
- Apply 1st sterile drape between thighs
- Fenestrated drape over perineum exposing labia
- Bring tray on 1st sterile drape
- Open catheter, apply inflation syringe and lubricate

Insert Catheter (Female)
A
- Retract labia with non-dom hand
- Sterile dominant hand > use antiseptic swabs to clean top to bottom > labial fold 1, labial fold 2, directly over urethral meatus
- Insert catheter (5-7cm) or until urine comes > advance another 2.5-5cm
- Release and hold with non-dom hand
- Slowly inflate balloon & pull gently to ensure resistance

Insert Catheter (Male)
A
- Retract foreskin if not circumsized with non-dom hand
- Grasp penis at shaft just below tip
- Pull opening apart and hold
- Sterile dom hand, cotton ball with forceps and clean penis tip (in circular motion) x 3 times
- Lift penis perpendicular (straight), applying traction
- Ask pt to bear down as if voiding and slowly insert catheter
- Advance 17-22.5cm until urine flows & insert another 2.5-5cm ater
- Lower penis with catheter in non-dom hand, placing end of catheter in tray
- Inflate balloon if an in-dwelling catheter)
- Reposition foreskin

After Insertion
A
- Attach end of catheter to collecting tube of drainage system
- Attach drainage system below level of bladder and to bed frame
