Semiotics
Focuses study on signs and symbols, often exploring the triad of meaning.
Semiosis
The relationships connecting signs, objects, and meanings.
Semiotics has three main areas of study. What are they?
1) Semantics
2) Syntactics
3) Pragmatics
What does Semantics focus on?
The ways signs relate to their referents and what those referents stand for. (What meaning does a sign have for a particular person in a particular situation?)
What does studies in Syntactics focus on?
Relationships connecting signs, which nearly always function as part of larger system.
What are Syntactics?
The system of rules which people use to combine signs.
What do Pragmatics studies focus on?
1) The ways in which signs impact people’s lives
2) How signs and sign systems are used as tools
