Catalytic Addiction/ Reduction Flashcards
1
Q
(R)?
(C)?
Pdt?
A
(R): H2 gas
(C):
- Ni(s), heat
- Pt(s), rtp
-double bond breaks, H added to where the bond is broken
2
Q
What kind of catalysis?
Why?
A
Heterogeneous catalysis
-reactants and catalyst are in diff phases
3
Q
What are the three phases of catalytic addiction?
A
- Adsorption of reactants
- Chemical reaction
- Desorption of pdts
4
Q
What is adsorption of reactants?
A
-Hydrogen and alkene get adsorbed onto catalyst surface
-> weakening of H-H bond& pi bond of C=C
=> increases surface concentration of reactants
5
Q
What is chemical reaction?
A
- H atoms interact with electron density in alkene double bond and bonds with carbon atom
- occurs with lower activation energy as the bonds within reactants molecules are weakened by adsorption effects
6
Q
What is desorption of pdts?
A
-produced alkene desorbs from catalyst surface
