Q

What kind of catalysis?

Why?

A

Heterogeneous catalysis

-reactants and catalyst are in diff phases

Q

What are the three phases of catalytic addiction?

A
  1. Adsorption of reactants
  2. Chemical reaction

Q

What is adsorption of reactants?

A

-Hydrogen and alkene get adsorbed onto catalyst surface
-> weakening of H-H bond& pi bond of C=C
=> increases surface concentration of reactants

Q

What is chemical reaction?

A
  • H atoms interact with electron density in alkene double bond and bonds with carbon atom
  • occurs with lower activation energy as the bonds within reactants molecules are weakened by adsorption effects
