Catalyst Flashcards
Whats an complex Ion
When a transition metal ion bonds to one or more ligands by a dative bond (coordinated bond)
What is a ligand
A molecule or ion that can donate a pair electron to a transition metal ion to form a coordinated bond
What is a catalyst
A catalyst speeds up the reaction, as it leaves parts of the reaction unchanged at the end of the reaction. it also lowers the activation energy
What is produced by the contact process? what catalyst is used?
Sulphuric acid by using vanadium oxide
What is produced by the Haber process? what catalyst is used?
Ammonia-NH3 by using Iron
What happens to vanadium oxide during contact process
The vanadium is reduced (to IV) then its oxidised to bring it back to vanadium oxide where it remains unchanged
What are the properties of transition metal
they are good as catalyst They have variable oxidation state coloured ion they can form a complex bond they speed up the reaction lowering the activation energy
